Good posture helps maintain proper alignment and balanced load distribution across the spine and joints. By reducing abnormal mechanical stress, maintaining joint mobility, and supporting efficient muscle function, good posture may help delay excessive wear and degenerative changes over time.
  • Alignment influences joint loading: Abnormal alignment can redistribute forces across joints and increase stress on specific joint compartments. In the knee, malalignment is associated with progression of osteoarthritis.
  • Biomechanics matter in osteoarthritis: A systematic review found that certain gait biomechanical patterns—including higher knee adduction moment and varus thrust—are associated with increased odds of knee OA progression.
  • Balanced movement distributes load: Appropriate alignment and coordinated muscle function help distribute mechanical loads more efficiently during standing and walking.
